Paula Jean Swearengin was born in 1974. She is challenging Senator Shelley Moore Capito in the race for West Virginia’s Senate seat.
Swearengin is an environmental advocate and activist. was professionally employed as an office manager. She is a former board member and representative of the Keepers of the Mountain Foundation, an organization that opposed mountaintop removal mining. Swearengin has also spoken on behalf of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition and the Sierra Club.
Swearengin was professionally employed as an office manager. In 2018, Swearengin challenged in a primary incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Manchin. Senator Manchin won the primary with 69.8% of the vote to Swearengin’s 30.2%.
The Democratic primary in West Virginia was scheduled on June 9, 2020. Swearengin won the primary election with about 38% of the vote.
