Summary

Patrick Roberts was born in 1936 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from Kansas. Senator Roberts’ seat is up for election in 2020. He announced that he would not seek reelection.

Roberts served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps prior to entering politics. He was elected to represent Kansas’ 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980. He served eight terms in the House, before being elected in 1996 to represent Kansas in the U.S. Senate. Senator Roberts was reelected in 2002, 2008, and 2014, but confirmed that will not seek reelection in 2020.

Senator Roberts is currently the Chairman of the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee. He also serves on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee; the Finance Committee; the Rules and Administration Committee; and the Select Committee on Ethics.

Senator Roberts opposed the Iran nuclear deal. He opposes the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act and the Combating BDS Act of 2017, two bills that aimed to fight boycotts that target Israel.

Senator Roberts cosponsored legislation objecting to UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity. He cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.

In 2019, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
