Martin Heinrich was born in 1971 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from New Mexico. Senator Heinrich was reelected in 2018 and his seat will be up for election in 2024.
Heinrich was the U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District from 2009 to 2013. He then ran successfully for the Senate seat vacated by retiring Senator Jeff Bingaman in 2012. In his early political career, he served also as a member of the Albuquerque City Council from 2004 until 2008, including one term as City Council President.
Senator Heinrich is currently serving on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee; the Armed Services Committee; the Select Committee on Intelligence; and the Joint Economic Committee.
Below is Senator Neinrich’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.
Senator Heinrich supported the Iran nuclear deal. He supports the two-state solution and has been vocal against anti-Semitism. Senator Heinrich cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.
Senator Heinrich supported the UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity, and the decision of the Obama Administration to not veto the resolution. Senator Heinrich was against the U.S. embassy move to Jerusalem, since he believed that the decision endangered Israel’s security and harmed American interests.
In 2019, he voted against the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
