Margaret Hassan was born in 1958 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from New Hampshire. Senator Hassan’s seat will be up for election in 2022.
United States Senator Maggie Hassan is the second woman in American history to be elected both Governor and United States Senator, along with fellow New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen. She served as the Governor of New Hampshire from 2013 until 2017. Prior to that, she served on the New Hampshire Senate from 2005 until 2010, being also Majority Leader between 2008 and 2010.
Senator Hassan is currently serving on the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP); the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and the Joint Economic Committee.
Below is Senator Hassan’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.
Senator Hassan supported the Iran nuclear deal and opposed the U.S. embassy move to Jerusalem arguing that the decision could inflame the region.
She opposes the discriminatory Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, a legislation that aimed to counter the discriminatory boycotts that target Israel.
Senator Hassan supports the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She cosponsored a resolution that objected the UN Security Council Resolution 2334.
In 2019, she voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
