Prior to becoming a U.S. Senator in 2007, Tester served in the Montana Senate. He was first elected on the State Senate in 1998, and in 2005 he was chosen to serve as Montana Senate President. Tester was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, defeating Republican incumbent Conrad Burns in one of the closest Senate races of that year. He won reelection in 2012 in another close race. He is currently the dean of the Montana congressional delegation.

Below is Senator Tester’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.
Senator Tester supported the Iran nuclear deal, considering it the only option at the time to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. He supported legislation that objected UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity. He opposes the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and cosponsored the Combating BDS Act of 2017, a bill that aimed to fight discriminatory boycotts that target Israel.
In 2018, Senator Tester cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.
In 2019, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
