Summary

Johnny Isakson was born in 1944 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from Georgia. Senator Isakson’s seat is up for election in 2022.

Isakson was elected to the Senate in 2005 and has been reelected twice since then. Prior to becoming a Senator, he represented Georgia’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 until 2005. He holds the distinction of being the only Georgian ever to have been elected to the state House, state Senate, U.S. House and U.S. Senate.

Senator Isakson is currently serving as the chairman of both the Senate Ethics Committee and the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, being the only Republican in the Senate chairing two committees. He serves also on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee; the Finance Committee; and the Foreign Relations Committee.

Senator Isakson opposed the Iran nuclear deal and supported the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. He cosponsored legislation objecting the UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity.

Senator Isakson cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding. He cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act that aimed to fight discriminatory boycotts that target Israel.

In 2019, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel. He is a cosponsor of the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which aims to provide for the consideration of a definition of anti-Semitism for the enforcement of Federal antidiscrimination laws concerning education programs or activities.
