Joseph Manchin was born in 1947 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from West Virginia. Senator Manchin was reelected in 2018 and his seat will be up again for election in 2024.
Manchin won the special election in 2010 to fill the seat left vacant by the late U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd and was elected to a full term in 2012. Manchin started his political career serving in the West Virginia legislature, first in the House of Delegates, and later in the West Virginia Senate. He previously served as the State Secretary of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005 and Governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010.
Senator Manchin is currently the Ranking Member on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He serves also on the Appropriations Committee; the Armed Services Committee; and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

Senator Manchin opposed the Iran nuclear deal. He opposed UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claims that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity. Senator Manchin introduced in the Senate the Combating BDS Act of 2017 and cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, two bills that aim to fight the boycott movement against Israel. He supports the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
In 2018, he cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Authorization Act of 2018, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding. He supported the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.
In 2019, Senator Manchin voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things strengthens Israel’s security, and allows a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
