Doug Jones was born in 1954 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Alabama. Senator Jones’ seat is up for election in 2020.
Prior to becoming a Senator, Doug Jones served as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1997 to 2001, appointed by President Clinton. He served in this position until 2001. Senator Jones joined the Senate after he won the special election held on December 12, 2017 with 50 percent of the vote. Previously the seat was held by Jeff Sessions, who resigned to become the U.S. Attorney General under President Trump.
In the current legislature, Senator Jones has been appointed to the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP); the Armed Services Committee (SASC); and Special Committee on Aging.

Senator Jones supported the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.
In the current legislature, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act of 2019, which, among other things strengthens Israel’s security, and allows a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
Senator Jones is a cosponsor of the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which aims to provide for the consideration of a definition of anti-Semitism for the enforcement of Federal antidiscrimination laws concerning education programs or activities.
