Summary

Dianne Feinstein, who is Jewish, was born in 1933 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from California. Senator Feinstein was reelected in 2018 and her seat will be up for election in 2024.

Senator Feinstein was first elected in the Senate in 1992. Prior to that, she served as Mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988. Feinstein ran for Governor of California in 1990, but she lost the general election after winning the nomination from the Democratic party. In 1992 she won the special election to the U.S. Senate. Feinstein has been reelected four times and is the longest current-serving female U.S. Senator.

Senator Feinstein currently serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. She also serves on the Appropriations Committee, Committee on Rules and Administration, and on the Select Committee on Intelligence.

Senator Feinstein supported President Obama’s decision to not veto a UN resolution that claims that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity and supported the Iran nuclear deal.

Senator Feinstein publicly opposed the Israel Anti-Boycott Act. She also opposed the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and called it a terrible decision.  

Senator Feinstein released a statement in May 2018 following violence in Gaza, but failed to mention “Hamas”, the terrorist organization that organized the riots, and instead suggested that “Israeli forces must exercise greater restraint”.

In 2019, Senator Feinstein was one of the Democratic Senators who voted against the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthens Israel’s security and allows a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.

Senator Feinstein is an original cosponsor of Senate Resolution 234 – introduced in Congress on June 5th, 2019 – which reaffirms the commitment of the U.S. to the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and argues that Israeli annexation of territory in the West Bank would undermine peace and Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state.
