Summary

Benjamin Sasse was born in 1972 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Nebraska. Senator Sasse’s seat is up for election in 2020.

From 2004-2005, Sasse served as chief of staff for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy in Washington, D.C. Sasse left the Department of Justice to serve as chief of staff to Representative Jeff Fortenberry in 2005. In 2007, Sasse was nominated by President George W. Bush to the post of assistant secretary of Health and Human Services. In 2014, he successfully ran to represent Nebraska in the U.S. Senate.

Senator Sasse is currently serving on the Judiciary Committee; the Select Committee on Intelligence; the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee; and the Joint Economic Committee.

Below is Senator Sasse’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community. 

Senator Sasse opposed the Iran nuclear deal and cosponsored legislation objecting the UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity. Senator Sasse cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act and the Combating BDS Act of 2017, two bills that aimed to fight discriminatory boycotts that target Israel.

In 2018, Senator Sasse cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.

In 2019, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
