Summary

Ilhan Omar was born in 1981 and is currently serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

Omar was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2018 midterm elections. Prior to that, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, where she was elected in 2016. She is a member of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives who has repeatedly used anti-Semitic and anti-Israel language.

In September 2019, Rep. Omar justified the anti-Israel BDS movement, telling CBS’s Face the Nation that “the opportunity to boycott, divest, sanction is the kind of pressure that leads to that peaceful process.”

In August 2019, the Israeli government decided to deny her, along with Rep. Rashida Tlaib, from entering the country because of their support of the BDS movement. Their trip was arranged by the Palestinian organization MIFTAH, which acts against the Israeli occupation.

In a press conference with Rep. Rashida Tlaib, after Israel’s decision not to allow them to enter the country, Rep. Omar suggested that the U.S. should condition defense aid it gives to Israel: “We must be asking as Israel’s ally [for] the Netanyahu government [to] stop the expansion of settlements on Palestinian land and ensure full rights for Palestinians if we are to give them aid,” Omar said.

In a tweet from 2012, she wrote “Israel has hypnotized the world”, invoking an old anti-Semitic trope of Jews controlling world events through some sort of mystical power.

Rep. Omar suggested in a speech that support for Israel, one of America’s closest allies, constitutes “allegiance” to a foreign country. She implied that American Jews are “buying” support for Israel and pushing that allegiance due to their “dual loyalty”, another anti-Semitic trope.

Representative Omar is a supporter of the discriminatory Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement that singularly targets Israel and aims to delegitimize it. She has called Israel an “apartheid regime”.

In June 2019, Representative Omar cosponsored Rep. Betty McCollum’s House Bill 2407, which accuses Israel of detaining, interrogating, and ill-treating Palestinian minors, asking the State Department to withhold U.S. security assistance funds to Israel that are allegedly used for this purpose.
